Renaming templates

Of course.

Even as simple examples, repeating "x" crosses are unpronounceable, and may even be mistakenly equated, for instance with Roman numerals : X, XX, XXX, XXXX/XL (10, 20, 30, 40) ...

Does this also happen "on other wikis" ?

Sometimes yes.

"Would this break existing usage ?"

No, I made sure it wouldn't ;

on the other hand, if you prefer, we can put for example:

• "Example" instead of ". " unique;
• "Example 2" instead of "..";
• etc. up to "Example 4" for "....".
